I'll be participating in two PhinneyWood Art Walk Events     Saturday, May 4, 2013

I'll be participating in two events in coordination with the Big One PhinneyWood Art Walk. This year, the BIG One will feature work from over 150 area artists in 84 businesses in Phinney-Greenwood. Over the years, this hugely popular event has turned into a neighborhood party with musical performances in participating businesses and churches, street performers, chalk art and activities for children.

Matthew will be reading his new book and some favorites from Monkey World A - Z of Occupations at Mockingbird Books on May 7th at 11 am. The event is free and everyone is welcome. Where should I buy one of Matthew's books?     Sunday, April 28, 2013

We always appreciate when a customer asks us "What is the best way to support you guys when I buy a new book?" We love that Matthew's customers really want to support his passion for creating unique children's books.  When you purchase a book through us you are helping support us the most. Matthew will earn an illustrators commission on the sale of that book but we also will earn a profit for each sale we handle personally. We purchase his books at a wholesale price and get to keep the profit from each book sale we handle ourselves.

We also really like Indiebound as it will direct customers to online shops and local independent brick and mortar venues. These venues really support Matthew as they hold book events highlighting Matthew's books and encourage customers to support local publishers, authors and illustrators.

We can't say we don't love Amazon too - Matthew even has an Amazon author page with all of his titles and reviews.

In the end we really just want to see Matthew's books in the hands of more kiddies and their parents so a big thanks for purchasing his books whatever way works best for you!

Tails Chasing Tails Released Today    Monday, April 8, 2013

Matthew's first book with Sasquatch books hits the shelves today! I love that this is a circular tale kids are encouraged to guess which animal in being chased.  I have read this book to Owen, our 2 1/2 year old son, a few times recently. I love that he really thinks about which animal is being chased and then turns the page with excitement to see if he is right. The story ends with a mouse chasing an elephant which was the first picture in the book. I was amazed that he flipped right back to the beginning of the book to start the chase all over again!

The artwork uses Matthew's characteristic distressed pinewood with bold lines and bright colors. A few new animals also hit the pages. I am particularly fond of the new fox - love that cute smile on him!

You can purchase a copy through our online shop or on Amazon.

Publisher Weekly Review     Thursday, March 21, 2013

More Press! It's so exciting with the release of a new book to get some press and see people enjoying the book before it even hits the shelves.

It's so intersting to see what people say about my work and I loved that this reviewer felt that the pieces in the book "have a static, almost totemic quality, as though the chase were part of a larger folktale." I certainly agree but have never thought about my work that way before!

You can read the article on my press page

Inspirational Children's Books    Sunday, February 3, 2013

Here is a list of books that I was asked to put together for a children's blog about my top 10 inspirational children's books.

Meg on the Moon –Helen Nicoll, Illustrated by Jan Pienkowski
This is the only book I can remember picking out of the book catalogue at primary school. I recently found it at my parents’ house and it still brings a smile to my face.

The Jungle Book – Rudyard Kipling, Illustrated by Maurice and Edward Detmold
Kipling’s home is close to where I grew up and in one of the rooms hang some prints by the Detmold brothers. It was seeing these prints that really got me interested in illustration.

The Animal Fair  — Alice and Martin Provensen
I found this book at a thrift store soon after I moved to Seattle and fell in love with it immediately. It’s full of stories and poems and lively illustrations.

The Color Kittens – Margaret Wise Brown, Illustrated by Alice and Martin Provensen
This time a single story written by Margaret Wise Brown who also wrote Goodnight Moon.

Cautionary Tales for Children — Hilaire Belloc
Mischievous poems for mischievous minds.

I Can Fly – Ruth Krauss, Illustrated by Mary Blair
Bright and playful illustrations that look fresh and modern even though they were produced over 60 years ago.

Up and Down New York  – Jonathan Adler, Illustrated by Tony Sarg
Imagine that you are a bird flying around New York in the 1920s. I don’t know how he managed to capture the city so well from above. He must have had a very tall ladder.

Charley Harper’s ABC’s  – Charley Harper
I first became aware of Charley Harper when we were both in a top ten list in a magazine. I have since checked out his work and it’s really lovely. Elegant and graceful. Modern and ancient.

Stories and poems by Spike Milligan. I love listening to old radio shows when I’m painting and the Goon Show has long been a favorite. This book is stuffed full of silly words and pictures.

I Am a Bunny – Ole Risom, Illustrated by Richard Scarry
The pictures in this book are beautiful and make you feel like everything in life is lovely even though it’s raining on the front cover. Reading this book will make you want to curl up for a snooze.
